 A "traffic light" system of labelling that identifies unhealthy foods in red and healthy foods in green is needed to help combat rising obesity rates, according to health and consumer groups.
Under the colour-coded scheme, green, amber and red labels would be used to show low, medium and high levels of fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium.
Calls for an overhaul of food labelling come after a survey, to be released today, revealed that shoppers would prefer the three colour scheme to the system preferred by food manufacturers.
